Pre-Game Notes (Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Carolina Hurricanes)

HAL GILL (DARRYL SYDOR)
[UPDATE #2] Marc-Andre Fleury will return as the starting goaltender for tonight's game.

[UPDATE] Here are the D line combination changes due to Gill's expected absence from tonight's game:
Brooks Orpik-Rob Scuderi
Mark Eaton-Kris Letang and
Darryl Sydor-Alex Goligoski

And here's what Sydor had to say about being added to the lineup due to Gill's injury:
"I'm already preparing for [the game]," he said. "Mentally, it's nice to know that you're going to be in, so you can focus, run things through your mind."
As reported yesterday, Hal Gill will not be in tonight's lineup due to an unspecified injury. In my opinion, it can't be good if they knew yesterday that he wasn't playing today (alot of players that reported to be injured up to this point had been reported to be a game-time decision -- Sykora and Zigomanis).

It appears Darryl Sydor will take Gill's spot in the lineup tonight. Do not expect anymore information on the injury or status due to the new NHL rule allowing the organization to choose not to provide information on injuries to the media.

It is unknown as to when Gill will return.

“We’re not quite sure if he’s not going to be there,” Therrien said. “It looks like (he won't play) but we’ll see more tomorrow. If he’s not going to be there we’ve got Darryl Sydor to jump in. We’ll see tomorrow.”

Gill has played alongside Rob Scuderi this season. If Gill doesn’t play, the Penguins will have to alter their defensive pairings.

“We’re going to have to adjust if Gill’s not there,” Therrien said. “Let’s wait until tomorrow and we’ll see how Gill is feeling, and we’ll make those decisions tomorrow.”

MATT COOKE
Cooke returned to practice yesterday since his last game on October 14th against Philadelphia, but his status for tonight's game is unknown.

“It feels great getting back out there,” Cooke said. “You feel a part of the team. When you’re skating by yourself, it is tough mentally and pretty boring.”

SIDNEY CROSBY

It's been mentioned since the game last Monday that Crosby has a sinus-infection which he's apparently be battling since last Saturday.

“It is what it is,” Crosby said of his condition. “I just hope it goes away soon.”

SIDENOTE -- I won't be able to post Game Highlights tonight since I'll be at the game and getting home pretty late!! I may have pics to post though.

I'm very jealous that you'll be at the game!!! I, on the other hand, will be sitting in class - at least through the end of the first period or so. Hope you're able to get lots of pictures for us!

This does suck for all of us. BUT it kicks butt, when you think of it from a "strategy” point of view. Other teams don’t have any idea how long a certain player will be out (they can often speculate on this with a good degree of accuracy if they know the exact injury), so they have less of an ability to “plan ahead”.

It’s great for your team (when you have the injury), Not so hot, when you’re trying to “reconnoiter” an opposing team (they have an injured player you’d like to have more information about).
