Crosby / Malkin Behind Ovechkin / Semin in THN's Top 10 Duos

WHAT?!!

That's right - John Grigg of THN.com ranks Alexander Ovechkin and Alexander Semin as the #1 hockey duo followed by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin as #2. Although I will give him the benefit of the doubt and point out that he does say, "here’s my list of the top 10 NHL duos I most enjoy watching play" and it's abundantly clear that it's his opinion and doesn't lead us to believe that this IS THE Top 10 NHL duos, so I can't argue with that -- or can I?

Of course I'm going to argue that I believe Crosby and Malkin are #1 above Ovechkin and Semin in this ranking of duos (even though this doesn't touch upon skills, one thing that sticks out in my mind to start off with is the fact that Sidney is not as selfish a player as Ovechkin is -- proof is in the difference between goals and assists -- and both Malkin and Crosby have much more class in their little pinkies than Semin ever will in his entire lifetime)! But this is just as relative an argument as who's the better hockey player between Crosby and Ovechkin!!

Here are Grigg's reasons:

  1. Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin -- easily the duo I want to see play the most are the two Alexes. In my opinion, Ovechkin is the best forward in the league; he scores, hits, always plays hard and his joy for playing is infectious. Semin is right at the top of the list when it comes to skill level in the NHL and just might be the heir to Joe Sakic when it comes to best wrist shots in the league. Together they’re dominating the league like no other duo this season, both averaging better than a point per game – despite Ovie’s slow start – and better than a plus-1 rating per game – an even better barometer of how dominating they’ve been thus far.
  2. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin -- hard to say right now which of these two is the better player. Crosby is the face of the NHL, but Malkin is the scoring leader and has the best rivalry in the league going with Alex Ovechkin. Skill-wise, they’re both off the charts, but both need to put the biscuit in the basket more. Whenever they’re playing, it’s hard to pull myself away from the game.

This guy is an idiot. Seriously, why is Semin so great all the sudden. OK he had a good start to this season, but thats all. Irritating...

The first thing (which annoys me), is that he's judging Malkin/Crosby against each other, and Semin/Ovetchkin as a pair. (ie "hard to say right now which of these two is the better player", in re: Malkin/Crosby). While at the same time, he says of Semin/Ovechkin "Together they're dominating the league like no other duo this season" Linking them together as a pair.

Second point: Crosby/Malkin have been split up more more than Semin/Ovetchkin this year, so, no, not as good a comparison. (I'm guessing that since he says "skill wise there off the charts" of Malkin/Crosby. He has higher expectations of them. And he's just ranking the others higher, because their closer to the expectations he has of them.

(Final note, and no offense intended, this "he scores, hits, always plays hard and his joy for playing is infectious." actually sounds more like Brenden Morrow, than Alex Ovetchkin)
