Former Penguin Announces Retirement After Raising the Cup

No better way to "go out" than ON THE TOP!  And that's just what Mark Recchi had in mind.

Moments after raising Lord Stanley for the third time in his NHL career (twice once with the Pittsburgh Penguins and then with the Carolina Hurricanes), he told Pierre McGuire that he's hanging up his skates.

CONGRATULATIONS to Mark Recchi and the Boston Bruins!!!

THANK YOU for that, Matt!! I meant to check into that (I usually do when I'm not 100%), but it was too late when I wrote it and went to bed without doing it ... which will be a lesson for me, but THANK YOU!! : )

I never got to see Recchi when he played with the Penguins, but did watch him when he was with the Canes & Lightning. So when he was traded to the Bruins I was thrilled! His experience, skill and calm leadership qualities made a clear difference from the start. When the Bruins were swept in last year's playoffs I felt so badly for him as he was clearly one of the biggest battlers on the ice. To make a seriously long story short, when he re-signed for one more year I immediately ordered his jersey. It has been a pleasure and honor to watch him play. I will miss him greatly next season, but could not be happier for him. If anyone deserved to go out on top like this it is him. Even with two other Stanley Cup wins I'd like to think this one will always have a special place in his heart. As surely Bruins fans will always have a special place in their heart for him.
