Will YOU Be Celebrating "the Kid's" Birthday Today?

There are ALOT of die-hard Pens fans out there and I KNOW there are just as many die-hard Sidney Crosby fans, so how many of you are going to be celebrating Sid's day today?

Are you one of the fans that would like to celebrate but don't know how? Here are a few fun (and unique) ways that I found while browsing through the various Pens sites / blogs on my lunch break:
  • Puck Daddy interviewed Crystal of "Crystal's Restaurant and Lounge" located in Pittsburgh's "Strip District" who told him of today's "Sid-friendly" specials she'll be having "on tap." If you're like Sid, then you'll want to be sure to be there today for 21-cent Jack Daniels shots (YES -- she told Greg she will honor her word)!!
  • The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review posted a few Penguins- / Sidney- / hockey-related concoctions (by way of name only) they found on WebTender.com to tickle your tastebuds -- The Penguin, Penalty Shot, Backup Goalie, Canada Dream, The Captain's Martini, Iceberg, Shoot, and Sid's Special; and they're even nice enough to list those drinks fans should steer clear of (if any of these make your senses tingle or peak your curiousity, head over the Trib to see how to mix up these magic potions yourself)!!
  • And, as mentioned in a post earlier this week, if you fancy yourself as a Crosby look-alike then head over to the Carson City Saloon where they're holding a contest at 10 PM this evening for a chance to win $100; and from 10 PM - 1 AM, to commemorate this occasion, drafts will be 87-cents and "You Call It" drinks will be $2.25!!

I would also like to add: IF ANY READERS PLAN TO ATTEND EITHER (or BOTH) OF THESE FUNCTIONS or ENJOY THE EVENING AT HOME WITH A home-made SIDNEY-RELATED BEVERAGE TO CELEBRATE AUGUST 7TH - or find any other way to celebrate, PLEASE SEND IN SOME PHOTOS AND / OR THE STORY AND I'LL BE HAPPY TO POST THEM HERE!!!

ENJOY (but BE SAFE)!!

Pittsburgh Penguins' BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE to Crosby

Happy 21st, Sid!

The thing about Sidney Crosbyis that he became so good, so fast – and handled it all so well -- people forgot how young he was.

Even now, people forget how young he … is.

Sid turns 21 today. Twenty one. In another life, he might be entering his senior year of college, getting ready to earn his degree and send out resumes, looking for a job to chart his place in the world. Instead, he is on the cusp of his fourth National Hockey League season, captain and leader of the hottest young team in hockey, trailblazing scorer and trophy winner, the fresh face of the new NHL and the game’s most marketable commodity.

Expectations always were great, the hype always enormous, especially as he dominated the highest ranks of Canadian major junior hockey to become two-time Canadian junior player of the year in 2004 and 2005. His career CHL points-per-game average of 2.51 was second in national history only to the 2.81 posted by someone named Lemieux. But even as he became the clear-cut No. 1 prospect in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, the supreme prize of the first post-lockout draft lottery, the kind of franchise player every general manger dreamed about … no one could have imagined he would accomplish all this before he turned 21.

Consider that Crosby:
  • Become the youngest player in NHL history to score 100 points (18 years, 253 days)
  • Broke Mario Lemieux’s team rookie scoring record with 102 points
  • Became the youngest player ever to lead the World Championships in scoring, in 2006
  • Won the Art Ross Trophy as NHL scoring champion, the Hart Trophy as league MVP, the Lester B. Pearson Award as the game’s most outstanding player and was named First-Team NHL All-Star as a 19-year-old in 2006-07
  • Became the youngest player ever to win the Art Ross Trophy.
  • Became the youngest player ever to receive the Lester B. Pearson Award.
  • Became the second-youngest player ever to win the Hart Trophy (Wayne Gretkzy)
  • Became the youngest player to start in the NHL All-Star Game since fan balloting began in 1986
  • Became the youngest team captain in NHL history (19 years, nine months)
  • Led his team to the playoffs for the first time in six years in 2006-07
  • Led his team to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 16 years in 2007-08

And he’s even overcome adversity. Crosby’s shot at a second straight NHL scoring title vanished in 2007-08 when he suffered a high ankle sprain that sidelined him for almost 30 games. But it is intriguing to remember that he was tied for the NHL scoring lead with 63 points when he suffered the injury on Jan. 18, and he finished the season with a points-per-game average (1.36) that was virtually identical to that of the superbly talented league scoring champ Alexander Ovechkin (1.37).

Moreoever, he rebounded magnificently in the Stanley Cup playoffs, sharing the NHL playoff scoring lead with Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg (despite playing two fewer games), leading the league in playoff assists, scoring two goals in the Penguins’ first win of the Cup Finals on home ice and hoisting his young team to within two wins of the sport’s ultimate prize.

Clearly, though, Crosby isn’t caught up in all he’s accomplished, because that prize – winning the Cup, and then winning more Cups – is what motivates him above all else.

In a recent interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, he identified losing in the Cup Finals as the greatest disappointment of his young career, said he’s still bothered by it, said that even several months after the fact, “being so close and not winning is still hard to digest.”

“Not closing the deal – its’ hard not to think about it,” he said. “Everybody I see brings it up. I’m reminded by it everywhere. You always see things on TV where guys had the Cup in their hometown. It’s a constant reminder. The memory of losing is not something that just goes away.

“I thought I was motivated before. It’s definitely more now. Being that close and not being able to do it – it’s just hard. The quicker you can get back to win it, the better.”

And so he’s not satisfied, not by a longshot – even with all the trophies, the records, the accolades, the long-term contract, the sponsorship deals.

Wealthy, accomplished and famous beyond any reasonable imagination as he turns 21, Sidney Crosby is only just beginning.

Wait ’til he’s 22.

Penguins Alumni to Play 18 for 4 Charities

The 11th Annual Penguins Alumni Charity Classic will be held this year on Monday, August 11th at the Valley Brook Country Club in McMurry, PA. A team of four golfers will be accompanied by one former Penguin taking part in this year's Classic who includes Mario Lemieux, Bryan Trottier, Phil Bourque, Pierre Larouche, Gary Rissling, Al McDonough, Denis Herron, Mitch Lamoureux, Dennis Owchar and Ed Gilbert.

“It will be a wonderful time for reminiscing with old teammates while assisting a variety of children’s charities,” stated Penguins Alumni Association President Warren Young. “We have received tremendous support from the community, and we are all looking forward to a great event.”
Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Heart Camp, Achieva, The Mario Lemieux Foundation and the Western PA School for the Deaf. To date, this event has raised $250,000 benefiting local children's charities. Teams will compete in the scramble-style tournament for prizes.

The event also includes a cocktail reception, dinner and silent & live auctions.

SIDNEY'S "Birthday Wish" (No Contract Offer Just Brief Discussions)

TIOPS has learned from a "high ranking Penguins official" that Pittsburgh and Brendan Shanahan have only had brief discussions and they have not made him an offer at this point. Shanahan prefers to stay with New York but is interested in playing for Pittsburgh if he and the Rangers fail to agree on a deal. Ray Shero is patiently waiting to see how this will play out before he decides whether or not to actively pursue Shanahan.

TIOPS previously posted that Shanahan told Shero he would be willing to sign for $1.5 - $1.8 million.

Still Some Interest in Sydor

There still seems to be some interest in Daryl Sydor.

Tampa Bay was previously interested but TIOPS is now reporting they are not as interested . Another team recently mentioned by TIOPS is the LA Kings who may be willing to offer a late round pick

As they said before, Shero doesn't appear to be in a hurry to deal Sydor and wants to wait until the start of training camp before he does anything.

Master Development Plan for New Arena

With the upcoming groundbreaking ceremony for the new arena to take place on Thursday, August 14th, I thought I'd share a site that gives all the information you could ever possibly what to know about it in the "Arena Master Development Plan". One of the posters on the LetsGoPens.com message board was nice enough to share the link!!

I was just thinking that they should've scheduled the groundbreaking on Sidney's birthday!! That would've been neat!

I'm hoping to look over the plan when I get a chance to find some interesting information to post so we could discuss it (or just to know more about the new arena). Look for that soon (or if any of you have already seen the link and / or had time to look through the plan and want to share what you know or what you think is interesting, feel free to drop me a line)!!

PICTURE: Tomlin in His Penguins Jersey!

It was last week that I reported Stan Savran presented Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin with his very own authentic Penguins Jersey being deemed the Penguins #1 fan on his "Savran on Sportsbeat" show. Above is the first picture I came across that was posted on the Steelers.com webpage. He actually put it on (after the cameras were off, apparently). Pretty cool!!

MOOREHOUSE Visits Steeler Camp

Pittsburgh Penguins President, David Morehouse, made it to the Steelers Training Camp on Monday to watch the team practice. He visited the Rooney's along with Kevin Colbert, the Steelers director of football operations (who was often spotted at Penguins games during the playoffs / SCF).

Bylsma Named Head Coach of Baby Pens

[from the Pittsburgh Penguins webpage]

On Monday, Dan Bylsma was named head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Bylsma was the Baby Pens assistant for the past 2 season and will be replacing Todd Richards, who accepted a position as an assistant coach with the San Jose Sharks last month. Since Richards' departure, there had been talk about his replacement and Bylsma had been a favorite to fill his shoes.

“Dan is one of the brightest young coaches in the American Hockey League, and is more than ready to take on the role of guiding the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins,” said Fletcher. “He has already helped in the development of several players who have made an impact in Pittsburgh, and his two years behind the bench in Wilkes-Barre give him a unique knowledge of our top prospects.”
“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to continue my coaching career with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins,” said Bylsma. “It’s been a goal of mine to become a head coach in the American Hockey League, and I can’t think of a better place to have that goal come to fruition.”

Will Shanahan be on the Team by the Time Sid Blows out His Candles?

It's well known that Brendan Shanahan contacted Ray Shero to voice his interest in playing for Pittsburgh and it's being reported by TIOPS that the Penguins remain Shanahan's #2 behind NY. But what's most interesting is that Pittsburgh has not shared in Shanahan's interest up to this point. TIOPS is also reporting that Pittsburgh is seemingly more interested in this possibility and that Ray Shero is speaking to Shanahan's representatives. Is it possible that Sidney Crosby has Shanahan on his wish list for his 21st birthday? Maybe. We'll just have to wait and see how this plays out.

Honestly, I'm not sure it would be a bad idea. Even though Shanahan wouldn't be able to replace Gary Roberts in terms of toughness, he could be ideal as veteran presence which is something the Penguins have lost a great deal of and it was obviously something that was necessary for them to make it as far as they did last season!

Crosby [may] know best!

Crosby Will Be Drinking Jack Daniels or Crown Royal on Thursday

Rob Rossi's exclusive interview with Sidney Crosby was featured in Sunday's Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. It covers things like what Sidney wants for his 21st birthday, what he'll be doing to celebrate, his thoughts on Hossa, and the upcoming season.

Sid will be turning 21 this coming Thursday, so what does he enjoy drinking -- Jack Daniels or Crown Royal!

Pittsburgh Penguins: HOTTEST NHL Team

The Pittsburgh Penguins
NHL's #1 "Hotties"
(including the HOTTEST Staal Brother)

The final results of the SportSquee's Challenge which was the blog's response to Puck Daddy's post "Video: For the ladies, the 25 hottest players in the NHL," ranks the Pittsburgh Penguins as the "Hottest Team" (actually tying with the Phiadelphia Flyers). And the hottest Staal brother? Do you need to ask? Jordan, of course (although, my personal favorite is Eric even though my allegiance will remain with the Pens)!! My only complaint -- where's the love for Jarkko Ruutu?!

As a side note, SportSquee's motto is "Because you can be a total girl, and still be a total sports fan." This motto and blog reminds me that I AM a girl and that it's perfectly normal to find athletes sexy and I don't have to turn off my feminine button just because I actually understand sports! I'll have to read this blog daily so not to forget this very thing (there's NO shame in being attracted to Sidney Crosby - he's on the Pittsburgh Penguins; everybody else is too)!!

The Pensblog - Still Standing!

It turns out that Blogger.com somehow thought The Pensblog was a spamblog. They're now back up and running - NO DRAMA - damn!!

Like they say, "jobbin ain't easy!"

And The Pensblog will remain the "South Park" of blogs!!

We don't know much, but after almost three years of jobbing we know we ain't getting shutdown because of libel or slander. - The Pensblog

It says Phil Bourque, Pittsburgh Penguins, 90-91, Enjoy it!

The Pittsburgh Penguins official webpage has a new article on Phil Bourque being the only NHL player (that they know of) to have his name etched on the outside AND inside of the Stanley Cup!

"When I got the Cup there was a bolt that was loose on the inside. It is very easy to take the bottom off of it and when I took the bottom off, I proceeded to fix the loose nut, and I noticed some French names that were carved inside. They had repaired the Cup in the 1940s and that is where I got the idea from." - Phil Bourque

"It says Phil Bourque, Pittsburgh Penguins, 90-91, Enjoy it!" said Bourque.

Blogger Terms of Service May Have Been Violated by Everyone's Favorite Pens Blog!!

I went to The Pensblog for my daily perusal of the site to get a good laugh for the day when I was immediately hit with this graphic!!

The Pensblog violating Blogger Terms of Service?? NO - not those guys (why would the blogger site be upset about gay bashing, making mentally retarded people the topic of jokes, posting of obscene graphics / videos - should I go on?!!)! But isn't that what makes them one of the better blogs on the net?!! They're not willing to compromise their blog for anyone! FREEDOM OF SPEECH, people!!

I can't wait to see what they come up with to take a stand against the "Blog Lock"!!

Let's hope their idea takes less than 20 days or else The Pensblog could be floating in cyberspace forever; never to return again!!

TOMLIN is Pittsburgh Penguins' #1 Fan!

Or, at least, FSN Sportsbeat thinks so!

Yesterday during a break in training camp, Stan Savran presented Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin with his very own authentic Penguins jersey sporting his name and the number 1 on the back! It was a true authentic jersey with the label of authenticity sewn inside by Dana Heinze, the Pittsburgh Penguins Equipment Manager who also happens to be from Johnstown, PA (my hometown) and a HUGE Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Tomlin was spotted at numerous Penguins games last season along with Kevin Colbert and he told Stan that he loves to attend the game with "his boys."

I think Stan was expecting the coach to put the jersey on but Coach Tomlin elected not to do so!

I wonder if Kevin Colbert is asking where HIS jersey is (do you think he would settle for #2?!)!

icethetics.com Obtains Pictures of Third-Jersey Logos

There's been alot of buzz of the new third jerseys for this upcoming hockey season. First, hockeybuzz.com posted a description of the jerseys; now, icethetics.com has posted pictures of the logos (the Pittsburgh Penguins is posted here - not much different from their Winter Classic jerseys). Icethetics.com does not have any plans on naming the source so the site urges "don't bother asking"! However, as always, unless a legitimate source like the Pittsburgh Penguins or NHL organizations release this information or more photos, I don't know how much stock I would put in these "leaks."

Former Penguins Bourque, Loney, Wregget, and Kachowski to Participate in Exhibition Hockey Game

The hockey community in Youngstown, OH is planning a charity fundraiser scheduled for August 24th to benefit Jason Baird and his family.

Jason Baird is a former Youngstown Steelhound who currently works for a landscaping company in Austintown. On July 17th, Baird was on a landscaping job riding a lawnmower when it exploded leaving him severely burned (over 60% of his body) when the lawnmower exploded who was severely burn in a lawn mowing accident on July 17th. He is recovering at the Akron Children's Hospital Burn Center.

“This is a benefit for a family in need and this family needs all the support we can give them,” said Kaminski, who is being assisted and supported by the SteelHounds’ Booster Club, headed by president Cindy Piedra of Boardman.
The main event is the exhibition hockey game to be played at 3:00 pm by current and former NHL players, former Steelhounds, and minor league players. A few of the NHL players that have committed to playing are former Pittsburgh Penguins - Phil Bourque, Troy Loney, Ken Wregget, and Mark Kachowski.
