Hockey Is Approaching: Penguins Rookie Tournament and Training Camp

Yesterday was the first real sign that the upcoming hockey season is quickly approaching. The Penguins announced information for this year's Rookie Tournament and the report date for the start of training camp.

As of right now, there's not much in the way of Penguins training camp other than the players will be reporting on Tuesday, September 16th. Pittsburgh will be release further details prior to opening.

From September 9th - 13th, Pittsburgh prospects will be in Oshawa, Ontario participating in the 2011 Rookie Tournament at the General Motors Centre along with prospects from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, and Ottawa Senators.

Pittsburgh Hornets* owner John Harris began talks with the Norris family, owners of the Detroit Red Wings, to begin an ownership transfer.

*Pittsburgh lost its only professional team in 1929 when the Pittsburgh Pirates moved the franchise across the state to become the Philadelphia Quakers. The Yellow Jackets returned to Pittsburgh in 1930 after Roy Schooley re-acquired the team. They were later purchased by Pittsburgh theater chain owner, John Harris, in 1932. On October 4, 1936, the Detroit Olympics were sold, moved to Pittsburgh, and were re-named the Pittsburgh Hornets (originally, the Hornets were the minor-league affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings who won the Stanley Cup in 1936 with Don Aurie on that team).

Busy Off-Season for Pittsburgh's James Neal

Let's hope that James Neal's off-season is an indication of what kind of season he plans to have with the Penguins come this September / October. He at least appears to have the best intentions for working hard to make it a great one and it would seem that his move to the Pittsburgh organization along with the possibility of playing alongside one of the Penguins stars like Sidney Crosby may be the big motivation he had been lacking in Dallas. One thing is certain, he's definitely serious about off-season training and maintenance which not only encompasses his work-out regime, but also diet and nutrition with his continued work with former NHLer (and Penguin player) Gary Roberts.

Roberts is known for his no-nonsense attitude both on and off the ice (as well as a no wheat, sugar, soy, or processed / packaged foods diet) that allowed him to return to play 11 more years in the NHL after his retiring at age 30 then moving on to retire again at the age of 43. The strict diet consists of a 26-item list that includes goat’s milk, sunflower sprouts, mung beans, salba, chia and hemp (mung beans, Adam Gretz of CBS Sports' Eye On Hockey Blog reminds us, are "very nutritious, but they smell like death" according to Creed Bratton of 'The Office').

This passion and attention to detail for training and nutrition has made Roberts a much sought-after trainer by a number of professional hockey players according to NBC Sports' ProHockeyTalk.

And most of Neal's hockey-related conditioning activities this summer has included [some form of] Gary Roberts. This can only be a good sign for things to come this season.

"Last Rep NHL Day at the Farm" (August 17th)
James Neal was among a few of the NHL players attending this training session. Last Rep is a company that creates a training mix made from organic ingredients (that come from The Beretta Family Farm). And "NHL at the Farm" is when they get together at the farm to train (photos courtesy of Last Rep; see Neal below with his Pirates hat again!).

NHL BioSteel Camp (week of August 22nd)
BioSteel (known by many hockey players as the "little pink drink") is a high performance sports drink used by top athletes and "quickly becoming NHL players' drink of choice." It was developed by former Toronto Maple Leafs trainer, Matt Nichols. According to an interview with James Mirtle, Nicols recently reported that BioSteel is being used by close to half of the NHL.

With a good product and production, good PR must follow for success. In addition to word of mouth among the players, Nichols and Gary Roberts have organized a camp for a few of the top hockey players in the league, including Neal, for the second consecutive summer. A total of 20 stars and an additional 16 of the league's top hockey prospects participate in a rigorous week-long camp focusing on strength training and drills. This year's camp was sponsored by Last Rep which was mentioned earlier in this post.

The group was divided into two teams based on who each players trainer typically is and ended the week by competing against each other in a scrimmage (the goalies in attendance weren't associated with either team - Steve Mason, Eddie Pasquale, Thomas McCollum, and Malcolm Subban - PK's younger brother):

Similar to the growing popularity of the drink itself, the camp is becoming pretty exclusive as there is currently a waiting list (the players actually pay $10,000 to attend). But, as far as former Penguins enforcer Paul Bissonnette is concerned, it's well worth it!

"I think these guys are paid about $10,000 a summer," Bissonnette said of the training staff. "You think well that's a lot of money, but it's an investment. Because if you put an extra five goals in, you're going to get way more than an extra $10,000 on your contract.

"And it's a write-off, which helps out, too."

Of course Neal didn't totally eliminate fun (or charity) from his summer.

On July 2, 2011, James was one of a handful of NHLers who were paired up with a pro-angler and took part in the annual Fish TV Celebrity Showdown. The charity fishing tournament raises money for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and was held in Palmer Park, Port Perry ON. I am loving the Pirates hat which shows just how proud / enthusiastic he is to play for Pittsburgh.

Neal took some time to discover social media. By now most of you probably know that he's on Twitter (@jneal_18). It was THE talk for a while ... he went "live" on August 12th ... and it IS legit (alot of the NHL players already on Twitter are following him and even Talbot said so!)!! He's pretty Twitter-saavy already ... he posted a few pics (one below)!

2011 Gary Roberts and Friends Celebrity Golf Tournament (August 17th)

Last August 18th was the inaugural game for this golf tournament that raised $25,000 for the "Jump Start" at the Wooden Sticks Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ontario. A few of the other players from last year's tournament include Steven Stamkos, Steve Downie, Michael Del Zotto, and Stephen Weiss.

Own A Piece of 'Slap Shot' History

Ask any hockey player or fan what their favorite hockey movie is and they'll most likely say, "Slap Shot." The movie, released in 1977, was written and produced by Nancy Dowd and inspired by her brother Ned's experiences playing for the minor league hockey team, Johnstown Jets (which was portrayed by the fictional team, Charlestown Chiefs, in the movie). It was mainly filmed on location in Johnstown, Pennsylvania (my hometown), but there are a few scenes that were also shot in Hamilton and Syracuse, New York.

In one of the last scenes of the movie, as the city of Charlestown celebrates the Chiefs' victory with a parade, player/coach Reggie Dunlop (played by Paul Newman) along with two other characters in the movie (Ned Braden played by Michael Ontkean and Braden's wife, Lily, played by Lindsay Crouse) are seated on top of the back seat of a sleek 1967 Lincoln Continental convertible.

Yesterday the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat reported that the owner of this very car, 95-year-old Karl Scott, Jr., is putting it on the market. Scott, a resident of the Presbyterian Home in Johnstown, suffered a stroke back in April and can no longer drive. So you could be the next proud owner of this piece of cult classic memoriabilia for the fair asking price of $18,000. The convertible which Scott believes will appeal to both automobile collectors and movie buffs alike has only 84,000 miles and features "suicide doors" that open in opposite directions. It has a leather interior and Scott has kept it in decent condition by only driving it on special occasions.

According to automotive expert and commentator of the Discovery Channel's "Mecum Auto Auction Muscle Cars & More," John Kraman, it's not easy to estimate the value of the car or what it would go for at auction, but it has very little to do with the fact that it was featured in a major motion picture and more to do with the condition of the automobile itself.

But how can you put a price on nostalgia?

He's already a stud. After a summer of training he will be a monster."

Cooke "Throws" First Pitch at Altoona Curve Game

Altoona, PA is home to the Altoona Curve and a little over 50 miles (45 minutes) away from where I live. Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend this game even though I had originally planned to, but luckily for me (and the blog), my friend Laura who lives near Altoona was there and kind enough to share her story and some pics!!

Hi Steel City fans! I had a great opportunity Monday night to meet Matt Cooke, as he was doing an autograph session in my hometown during the AltoonaCurve game. I arrived at the ballpark at 6:00, ready to run to a spot in line. By the time, I got to the autograph line, I’d estimate there were about 900-1,000 people in front of me. The game started at 7:00 with Matt and his son Jackson throwing out the first pitch of the game by way of slapping a puck into a net.

Matt quickly made his way to his table to begin signing autographs for his scheduled 90-minute session. While waiting, I got out of line to go take pictures because I was afraid it would be dark by the time I got to the table, if I even got to the table at all due to the line.

As we were almost to the table, a security guy passed us and I asked if we would make it through the line considering Matt had already been signing for over 2 hours. The security guy replied, not to worry, that Matt had already agreed to sign for anyone who was in lineand waiting. He also said that he estimated there were about 1,500 people in line that night.

Finally, after a 3-hour wait, I made it to the table. Matt was so incredibly generous with his time, making sure to autograph each person’s item and pause to allow them to take pictures with him.

When the game ended a half an hour later, there was still a line of people waiting to get through to meet Matt. I’m not sure what time he finished autographing, but my best guess would be around 10:00 or even later.

Say what you want about him on the ice, but off the ice, he seems like a great,stand up guy!

Let's Shift Focus on Crosby from Negative to Positive

I really don't want to give all these reports about Sidney Crosby any power / control - there's been too many and too much with lots of contradiction. The truth is, I just don't want the time come to pass where my fear becomes reality: he will never be the same despite when / if he returns and neither will hockey. And that's the last thing I'll try to say until training camp starts.

Around the same time that the Pens released the "latest" information on Crosby this evening, "The Globe and Mail" posted an article about him with an entirely different twist and a positive spin.

In the midst of the uncertainty surrounding Crosby's progress and all the rumors that have come about because of it, he continues to live his life and just be Sidney Crosby. He took the time out of his off-season to call Matthew Mancini, one of five [Canadian] winners of Wind Mobile’s Best Conversation Ever competition. The competition gave all five the opportunity to speak to the "person of their dreams" while donating $100,000 to the Canadian charity of that person's choice. Mancini chose to speak to Crosby and Crosby requested that the donation go to the Sidney Crosby Foundation.
But even this feel-good story touched on the current hot topic on Crosby and his progress with one of the questions Matthew asked him (perhaps shedding some new light on the subject):
Matthew wore the light blue jersey Crosby was wearing when he was injured earlier this year, a sign of solidarity with his favourite player. His concern also led him to ask a question that has been on many people’s minds lately: “How are you feeling?”
Crosby told him that he misses being out on the ice but is doing well and looking forward to playing again this season.

Adams Undergoes Appendectomy, Will Be Ready for Training Camp

What Do You Mean Crosby Won't Be Ready for Training Camp?

I know, I KNOW ... just let me get it off my chest, OK?!!

I'm certain, by now, you've all heard about the huge Crosby buzz on the internet earlier this week created by one, single Tweet. If you haven't, then let me explain (this will just be a review for those of us who are quite familiar [and, perhaps, tired of] the whole incident).

It was a typical Sunday evening (August 14th) until an unsuspecting Josh Rimer tweets the following:

Also hearing from 3 sources now that Sidney Crosby won't b ready 2 start season. I hope its not true because the NHL needs its best players!

Then, as you can imagine, ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE!!

That "simple," 140-max-character tweet was retweeted 100+ times by everyone and his brother including the most informed hockey / Pens writers (i.e., my man Rob Rossi - LOL) all across Twitter in a matter of minutes. In fact, it caused such a stir that Ray Shero himself had to schedule a media conference for the next day (and spoke to Rob Rossi who posted an article and blog post about it that same night) to calm the [Pens] masses. The poor guy (Mr. Rimer, NHL Home Ice Producer on SiriusXM Radio) soon learned that the shit hit the fan from the frenzy he inadvertently caused ... I'm sure his thought was simply to tweet information he obtained from THREE SOURCES probably just hoping for a few more followers, but ultimately it lead to an entire controversy which some fans are still talking over and debating about.

I find the funniest thing about this is that not one thing about this whole Crosby progress fiasco had / has changed from prior to this tweet until after (and since)! But because there hasn't been any real word on Crosby's progress up until this point (aside from that single, amateur video posted to YouTube of Crosby skating in Halifax) and everyone (both Pens faithful and Crosby-haters alike) has been waiting on baited breath for any news, a mountain was made into a mole hill.

But prior to this I was, as I'm sure many fans were, happy with just that video. There were no conclusions to be drawn and nothing open for debate; it was just a few minutes of Crosby skating on a rink and something for us to enjoy until the hockey season starts up again. It was neither positive or negative, but it was something and, in fact, it was at least a little more than what we had previously and it was (what all of this always has been since the moment he suffered his concussion) another step toward his return. I was happy to know that much for the moment and not too concerned with the upcoming season (or any thoughts of "what if").

Until that [now] infamous tweet ...

But even now, I'm happy with what I know because it never really changed (the possibilities were just brought to light just a little bit too soon).

So once again, I'll wait. I'll wait until pre-season comes around and the guys file back into Pittsburgh for the start of training camp and then I'll begin to wonder and, maybe, worry about how Crosby has progressed and what that means for his playing or not this season. I will also hold off on any rash judgements or needless panicking until then. And I would suggest the same for you (not only because it's less stressful but also because both Shero and Bylsma have said they are dealing with Crosby's progress similarly); and besides, look what it did for Mr. Josh Rimer.

So take your time, Sid, but just get better - hockey isn't the same without you!

Another Untimely NHL Death: Rick Rypien

Late yesterday evening, the news broke of Winnipeg Jets (and former Vancouver Canucks) player Rick Rypien's death. He was found dead in his home in Alberta by a family member. He was only 27 years old.

Although details of Rypien's death have not been released, the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) have said that the death was "sudden" and "non-suspicious." Reports say that he requested leave to take care of undisclosed personal matters back in November 2010 (eerily similar to Derek Boogaard's story). Another unconfirmed report noted Rypien suffered from depression and that this last leave of absense was his second request in the last three seasons with the Canucks.

The Jets released a statement on their webpage late yesterday:

“We are deeply saddened to confirm Rick’s passing. As many people are aware, he had strong ties to True North Sports & Entertainment, the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club, the former Manitoba Moose Hockey Club and the Vancouver Canucks. We would like to express our sincere sympathies to the Rypien family as well as Rick’s friends. We also appreciate all of the support that has come pouring in from Rick’s fans. Rick was a talented player with an extremely bright future. His hunger for the game made him a valued team member both on and off the ice. This loss has impacted us as more than just a hockey team.”

Rypien recently signed a one-year contract with Winnipeg this past July after playing with the Vancouver Canucks for the past six seasons. The Canucks have also issued a statement on their webpage as well.

Many fans have created a memorial outside of Rogers Stadium to express their sympathy (pictured right; for more, CLICK HERE). Many players have also used Twitter to express their condolences.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Rypien family as well as the Vancouver and Winnipeg organizations along with the fans as well. It's such a sad thing and a very big loss. I believe a Canucks fan has summed it up pretty well with the following statement:

... any time you hear a hockey player has passed away, especially in the off season, it hurts everyone no matter what team you're cheering for.

Rumors of the 2012 NHL Draft Being Hosted in Pittsburgh Won't Die

The more that new rumors surface about Pittsburgh being the location of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the more legitimate it becomes (then again, so did all the rumors surrounding Jagr's return to the Pens this season - let's just hope it's not a similar outcome).

At the end of last month, Rob Rossi reported that the Penguins submitted a bid for the 2012 draft to be held at the CONSOL Energy Center and that speculation was, at that time, that we were a "shoe-in" was quickly denied by the NHL.

It's been almost two weeks and talk had settled until this past weekend when the rumor mill started back up again. Word that the popular Anthrocon ("furry fandom" or "furries") convention which has been hosted in Pittsburgh the past several years and already scheduled for 2012 has been pushed up a week earlier. This is significant because the draft is typically held during the last full weekend before July 1st (in 2012, that would be June 22-24 since the last day in June is Saturday, the 30th and is not a full weekend and would also conflict with the start of free agency). From the official Anthroocon webpage:

Anthrocon 2012 will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA, from JUNE 14 to JUNE 17, 2012. Please note that this is one week earlier than was previously announced!

Pittsburgh has been given a very rare opportunity to host an event that they have been wanting to host for many years ... The City approached Anthrocon very deferentially and asked us if we would consider moving our 2012 convention just one week earlier to help them realize their collective dream.

And it doesn't sound like Anthrocon was immediately willing to forfeit the scheduled week UNTIL the city offered them an additional 100 hotel rooms within walking distance of the convention; however, I must add that the site did mention as accomodating as Pittsburgh has been and since becoming a "Pittsburgh institution," that they "were honor-bound to return the favor in any way that we could." Very admirable, I might also add (on both of the organizations parts).

He also recently did an interview with iSport.cz (link is in Czech; not translated) which includes a few words about his "confusion" with Penguins fans' reaction. I'm already tired of his whining ... I guess he has to blame someone other than himself (how else would he rationalize the idiotic way he and his agent went about his return to the NHL while playing around with Pittsburgh?)!! Talbot's Most Recent Blog Post - Leaving Pittsburgh to Join Philadelphia

A new reader pointed out that Talbot has a new blog post and I was interested to see what he had to say (post-Philly signing).

It's pretty interesting and he actually thinks that (I'm interpreting the rough interpretation of Google Translate from french) he believes Pens fans are more upset with the Jaromir Jagr signing than his. That's actually pretty close to the point I was trying to make: the news was announced on the same day almost around the same time, so fans didn't have a chance to process the news of Jagr's signing with Philly and so the anger carried over into Talbot signing with the Flyers (even thought I'm CERTAIN we all still would be upset, but just not as upset!).

But in all honesty, I think it's Jaromir Jagr has been the most criticized in the newspapers in Pittsburgh because he did not join the Penguins.

He also gives good insight into his own feelings the day he signed with Philadelphia (somewhat similar to what alot of fans felt as well, I'm guessing). And he makes a great point by saying that nothing will change the fact that he gave his all for Pittsburgh. I think it actually brings a little closure to hear his side.

I remember going to bed at night by imagining the other wearing a uniform. Given all the wonderful moments that I experienced in the uniform of the Penguins, I found it difficult. I spent six seasons with the Penguins, I gave my heart to this team and it is with her that I won the Stanley Cup. When I look back on my six years in Pittsburgh, I see only positives.

Let's see what the reaction of the supporters of the Penguins during the first visiting Flyers in Pittsburgh on Dec. 29. I do not know how I will be welcomed, but no one who can remove all the energy I gave everything and we have achieved as a team. Find me on the side opposite to Pittsburgh, it will be strange. He's strong, like bull! The Penguins webpage just posted thier 5th installment of the Malkin videos.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (Part 5)

This time he's using weights. And here's a little something I quickly researched after taking notice of a few things:

If you notice (see pic below), the orange weight is 25 kg (USA) and 25 kilograms = 55.1155655 pounds. I cannot make out what the black weight is, but I think I can make out a "0" ("zero") and I do think I see "USA" and since it appears smaller than the orange one let's just say for argument's sake it's 10 kg. And 10 kilograms = 22.0462262 pounds.

So that would mean that Malkin is working with A WHOPPING TOTAL OF ABOUT 154.34 POUNDS OF WEIGHT!!!!

But wait ... I think I may have forgot to include the weight of the bar (I do know a little something about lifting weights from my husband, but don't let that fool you - neither one of us are dedicated to working out!)! I checked on this before adding it to the post and it said that you DO include the weight of the bar and that the weight of the average bar is 45 pounds, so ...

THAT WOULD BE NEARLY 200 POUNDS RIGHT THERE!!! So now I'm even more impressed!!!

I guess I could, in fact, be displaying my ignorance right now, but to me, that's alot of weight!!! And here's another thing to think about, right now he's listed as 195 pounds on the Penguins webpage so that would mean he's working with ~~almost 80%~~ nearly100% of his body weight ... still sounds like a lot to me, but then again walking is the only form of exercise / activity this lady does right here!!! PLUS, he is an athlete so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised (or impressed?), but I AM!!!!

I think alot of us have been anxious to hear that Sid's back on the ice once again. That news was reported a little over a week ago.

But how about some video? Would you like to SEE Sid in action (as recent as LAST WEEK!)? Well, THANKS TO CullensVids1, we can!! Below is video of Sid at what appears to be (one of four NHL-size rinks at) the BMO Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I tried contacting the individual who posted the video on YouTube (CullensVids1) to get a little more information, but he hadn't responded to me by the time I uploaded this (let's hope I can post an update!).

From what I gather from comments posted and his answers on the YouTube channel, this video was taken last week and, no, the goalie is not Sid's sister, Taylor.

Isn't it great to see this?? And it's Sid ... I mean, look at him go!! I'm hoping this is a good sign for his return come season's open - it looks like the rust has already wore off if there ever was any.

Is it October yet (I'm certain no one is asking that more than Sid!)?!!

Sad Development / Arrest in Derek Boogaard's Death

Most of you probably recall the untimely death of NHL enforcer and NY Rangers winger, Derek Boogaard back in May.

Yesterday, his younger brother Aaron (a former WB / S Baby Pens player) was charged in his death which comes as just as big of a surprise as Derek's death to most everyone especially those closest to the brothers.

The Younger Boogaard was charged specifically with a felony for unlawful distribution of a controlled substance (which also applies to narcotics that are given away for free) as well as interfering with the scene of a death. Reports are that Aaron told police that he gave Derek "a single oxycodone the night before he found Derek Boogaard dead in their Minneapolis apartment" then "allegedly flushing the rest of his brother's drug stash - a mix of oxycodone and related drugs - down the toilet before police arrived," which are details that have just come to light and ultimately led to the charges.

This isn't probably the most opportune time for the news to come out for Kennedy since it will likely be overshadowed by the Pens announcement that they withdrew their offer to Jagr moments before, but it's still GOOD NEWS all the same!

The Penguins announced that they re-signed firecracker forward Tyler Kennedy for two more years.

This signing solidifies a team that can definitely make a good run for the Stanley Cup next season and I'm really glad to see him back!

No Answer, but It's Over and It's as Official as It Can Get ...

It's actually not the worst ending I had imagined, but it's still not one I would've picked either.

The Penguins recently announced that they withdrew their offer to Jagr. I suppose that's better than his rejecting "us," but it still feels like shit.

YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE, JAROMIR JAGR, and you blew it while leaving any chance for such a prime moment to occur again virtually impossible. And I really can't blame the Penguins organization as I find the way you and your agent, Svoboda, handled this entire situation to be totally irrational especially with everything the Penguins have already done for you up to this point.

But this was it, that one perfect opportunity to rid yourself of all the negative stigma (deserving or not) that was over-shadowing your reputation and career with Pittsburgh and it's fans. That is all gone now along with all the hopes and possibilities that we all held with it. I have no doubt this will be YOUR asterick in the Penguins record books.

I wish you the best of luck in the rest of your career and will forever watch your highlights in awe and amazement, but to continue calling myself your fan will only open me up to more of your foolishness and make me look like a fool too. At this very moment, after close to 20 years of being your fan and sticking by you through it all, that's devastating to me. I hope that whatever decision you make that it is well worth the costly price of the Penguins organization (your relationship with Lemieux especially), Pittsburgh fans, and your legacy.

I do have one question for you though ... what jersey will you be wearing when you're inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Could this be a look at what's to come at 12 noon today (even though Rob Rossi can / has logically explained what this is with a single sentence tucked deep in one of his articles last night)?

In anticipation of a Jagr signing, the Penguins have constructed web pages with tributes to his career, complete with video montages and Jagr-related items.

YOU CAN NO LONGER VIEW THIS FOR YOURSELF AT THE OFFICIAL PENS WEBPAGE AS IT'S BEEN UPDATED (to omit "signs with the Penguins"). But I promise the above screen-cap is legit because I did it myself late last night when I posted my last entry). Again, I must stress that this still does not confirm anything as it can be explained with the information reported by Rob Rossi (above the graphic).

We can only be so lucky that the above graphic becomes reality so the Pens webpage can again grant us access to what they designed for Jagr's return, perhaps at 12 noon today, and to celebrate one of greatest returns in Penguins history since "La Magnifique" along with possibility of what great things can come from it this coming season. I hope we're not disappointed ...

BUT ... Just A Few More "Jagr Watch" Developments

I am seriously going to bed the second I post this (because this is just one roller coaster ride that I no longer want to be on at the moment; I'm getting sick)!

I forgot to mention one more important Rossi tidbit in his article from last night. Rossi reports that Jagr has received offers for one-year deals from both Montreal and Detroit AND, despite everyone assuming that the sticking point is that all the other teams are offering Jagr significantly more and Pens offer was final, Rossi says all offers are for about $2 million which is around what the Penguins are rumored to have offered (and Shero has said was a "competitive offer"). Well, yes, it's competitive ... they seem to be [THE SAME] quite close, so what's the problem? I'm SO confused ... I'm even more confused than I was before I said I was going to bed the last time! I'll just hurry up and get to the next "development."

SO LASTLY ...

According to TIOPS's DePaoli, sources are saying that Jagr is having "minor concerns about connecting with Pens young core" (the actual title of his post); DePaoli apparently spoke to Svoboda over the phone at 9:00 PM last evening and said, "we {may} need a few days to sort things out."

Another thing that popped out at me while visiting TIOPS was a comment (from "Balthazaar") on the article I was reading (mentioned above):... which listed and led to the following link ... CLICK HERE (and notice what the pictures are named; just in case, I took a screen cap - SEE BELOW!)

Since posting this, Rob Rossi has decided to rain on everyone's JagrWatch parade. What happened to being the bearer of good news and all the positive spins he's been putting on his reports? Humph ... he just HAD to include this little tidbit in his most recent article that he posted late last night:

Could this be a matter of interpretation, re-hashing, and then reporting it as a new spin - making it sound better than it is even though it may be the truth (on the part of Mr. SanFilippo / his source)? In other words, has Mr. SanFilippo and his source really told us anything new? We have, in fact, heard that (according to those close to Lemieux) Jagr told Lemieux he would sign with Pittsburgh; and now (thanks to Mr. Rossi), we know that the Penguins organization has, in fact, constructed web pages as tribute to Jagr.

Does that prove that Jagr is, in fact, signing with the Penguins and the announcement is to be made tomorrow (today) at 12 noon?

I'd say we're back to square one, Pens Nation and I'm going to bed! : (

I was told Jagr has already told Lemieux that he's going to sign with Pittsburgh and that the Penguins have a huge front page for their Web site ready to go live at Noon tomorrow with a big "welcome home" theme.

Why the delay then?

From what I was told Jagr's agent Petr Svoboda may have been trying to lure another team into offering Jagr a bit more money so he can put a PR spin like "I turned down more money to come back to Pittsburgh."

JagrWatch Update: A Few New Developments, But NO Decision

There seems to be a flood of information that came out over the internet earlier today and it's all still very frustrating. I'll try to dissect some of what I've heard / read the best that I can.

JUST IN: Rossi to post updates shortly ... ~~since this ended up being so long (and LATE), I'll put any updates in a separate post~~ I just can't seem to finish this post ... I published it earlier but noticed I hadn't read it over and it wasn't completely done, so now it's late, LATE and here's a LINK to Rossi's latest article --> Pens still don't know Jagr's decision

MOST RECENTLY, Mark Madden reported on 105.9 The X that sources are saying Svoboda denies there was a deadline for Jagr's decision. So who's lying?! Many sources state, as Rob Rossi has, that Lemieux has told those close to him that Jagr will be a Penguin once again (do they know something we don't?). [If not] this just magnifies the negative impact this will have on his relationship with Lemieux and Pittsburgh if he signs elsewhere. I agree with Madden in the fact that if he does sign with another team, his legacy in Pittsburgh means nothing to him which I find really upsetting.

And then there's Pierre McGuire (my buddy, "Fee-Fee") who is reporting that the Penguins offer to Jagr was only between $1.3 and $1.5 million. That's what many participating in the #JagrWatch have been referring to as "low-balling" and I really don't think the Penguins would do that to JJ. Pittsburgh has enough under cap, leaving them enough for future use, to offer him a generous $2 million which is rumored to be what he wanted, so I'm not sure I would start putting stock in my funny, bald, little "Fee-Fee" now!

Have I mentioned that the Flyers want thrown in the hat? No, I'm not joking, they seriously want a chance at Jagr too (according to TSN's Darren Dreger via @DarrenDreger)! Wouldn't that just be the cherry on top of a shit sundae?!

I also want to make sure I relay this to all of my readers in order to relieve any panic some sources may be causing / have caused today:

So ... DON'T PUT STOCK INTO ANY FOREIGN SOURCES OR ANYONE QUOTING / USING FOREIGN SOURCES!

The "Move is on to put out ton of misinformation" just screams "Svoboda is shady" to me and makes me quite nervous! A little part of me considered that Svodboda was the "puppetmaster" in all this drama and it frustrates me that even though it wouldn't be far off from the Jagr we've come to know and love (being so "wishy-washy" unable to make a decision then when he does, he second-guesses himself) that he would allow someone else to make a decision that could effect his future with Pittsburgh so dramatically. That's even more of a reason to believe that Svoboda is behind most of this ("I smell a rat and sense a double-cross" -- M. Madden). Or, I suppose, Svoboda is trying to do his job and create more interest ($) for Jagr; HOWEVER, in doing that, Svoboda does not have Jagr's best interest in mind when it comes to Pittsburgh and his career ... it's like leading him to a death sentence where his legacy as a hockey player is concerned, for sure ... FORGET returning to Pittsburgh and retiring the jersey, I would guess especially since Lemieux himself has made comments about being fairly certain that Jagr would sign with Pittsburgh.

With as much time and emotion I've invested in these past few days, I'm exhausted and feel quite deflated like my emotions tossed around too much. If he doesn't sign with Pittsburgh, my days of defending him are over because that's the dumbest move I believe he could ever make and no amount of rationalization will ever make me believe otherwise (it's the last straw). I will include myself in the vast majority of Pens Nation who already feel highly disappointed and led astray by Jaromir Jagr.

I hope that never comes to pass, but time will tell (and we will know, for sure, tomorrow). His homecoming, which team he really wants to sign with, the greed / money, how many years he'll play, and his legacy are all irrelevant as far as I'm concerned because all I want is what the Pens organization as well as the rest of the fans want and I'll use Madden's words to sum that up:

"Jagr owes the city of Pittsburgh a straight answer."

It's as simple as that.

It's today and my blog buddy at 25stanley.com IS THERE (hopefully he'll have lots of good "scoop" and pics to go along LIKE he usually does!)!! Fellow (for now) Penguins and NHLers are taking part such as newly signed Pascal Dupuis.

According to 25stanley's twitter (@25stanley), in an interview he conducted with Max, Talbot stated that he did talk to the Leafs organization during the draft last weekend and that Brian Burke was " really classy."

That's what I feel like right now with all this Jagr nonsense. I woke up wondering if today will play out like yesterday or if it will ever end although I have NO IDEA what's going on nor can I use this day (or the next) to change the outcome. I JUST WANT IT TO BE OVER NOW no matter what the outcome. As I'm sure most of you who spent the majority of yesterday hanging on every word, article, rumor, report, and TWEET about Jagr's decision are, today I am exhausted and very close to being "over it [him]!"

With that, here are some of the latest happenings with #JAGRWATCH 2011:

As of earlier this morning (according to the latest Rob Rossi article), Petr Svoboda claims that Jagr IS in New York and that he (Svoboda) was scheduled to meet with Shero "shortly" with Rossi adding that this was 9:20 AM.
Svoboda is also claiming that a decision will be made by the end of today
Jagr's "heart is in Pittsburgh," but this decision is a tough one for him (this makes me uneasy especially when considering the following Svoboda quote ...)
"We are going to exchange some things," Svoboda said, adding that he would also speak with Detroit and Montreal about Jagr." from Rossi (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)
Rossi's opinion (via @RobRossi_Trib): "Pens have made their offer. Cannot forsee them 'exchanging things.'"
While on Sports Talk on Trib Live this morning, Rossi stated that, "according to many, many people around the league and those close to Mario he is confident a deal is going to get done ..." (since Lemieux personally spoke to Jagr last week, if he does decide not to sign with the Penguins, this would be such a blow to that connection (and this entire idea of a homecoming to rebuild some of the bridges Jagr burnt when he left Pittsburgh especially when Lemieux seems to be so set on the notion of making things right where Jagr is concerned so the organization can rightfully honor him as part of Penguins successful history; I just can't see Jagr doing that to his "idol," but you just never know ... who really would've thought that birthing turtles would keep Jagr's plane from landing at JFK?!)

Two (ok, maybe three) things I know for sure ...

#JagrWatch WILL END (and we won't have to wait much longer because tomorrow is July 1st)
although this may all just be "Jagr being Jagr," this isn't any way to start (or gain closure) with the Penguins organization or the fans of Pittsburgh - if he does not end up in Pittsburgh, I am certain he will get more than "booed" upon his arrival at the CONSOL with the NHL team of his choice (can you say "Hossa?!"; personally, I can say that until I hear more about this entire situation and thoughts FROM JAGR HIMSELF, I am a little frustrated with him and may remain so (and I have been a fan of his from the beginning ... have always come to his defense and not only did I not take part in the harmonious "boos" from Pens fans, it would actually make my skin crawl ...)
this was ONE HELL OF A RIDE that we Pens fans will never forget and will continue to talk about for years to come (I mean, seriously, you can't even make up anything better with a story like this!)

So until Jagr SHITS AND GETS OFF THE POT, check back here for breaking news and updates ... although I won't be as consumed with Twitter as I was yesterday, I will be keeping close track of this Jagr saga!!

Some GOOD NEWS Today: Pens Re-Sign Asham

The Penguins just announced that they re-signed Arron Asham to a 1-year / $775,000.00

I'm actually happy with this signing (aside from Rupper most likely being gone) because I really want Asahm to win a Cup ... seeing his face when we lost Game 7 in the first round was devastating ... you KNOW with being so close these past two seasons that he's just ready to win a Cup ... he'll have another chance at that this year and hopefully he'll play that way the entire season (not just in the playoffs!)!

Talbot's agent, Pat Brisson: Talbot's rights have NOT been traded to Toronto, or to anyone, for that matter.

This just reported by RDS.ca (rough translation by Google Translate).

When translated, the article only reports what Shero said at the Entry Draft (this past weekend) and nothing about the Leafs. To paraphrase, Shero said that he expects Max to "depart" and he wishes him well. I'm still not certain about this report. Maxime Talbot has not to worry as nearly a dozen NHL teams could make him the eye July 1.

~~Maybe I'm missing something or found the wrong article~~. How do you get that Talbot's negotiating rights have been traded to Toronto from that? I'm not quite sure. Personally, I find it laughable that with the article above, even Pittsburgh news stations are beginning to report on this "news." I'm guessing it's just the era of the internet and media and print sources' desire to be first and fast (I suppose I can't blame them).

But I'm not going to put much stock into this one until I see more sources report; perhaps until I read it on the Penguins official webpage (even TSN is reporting on what RDS said ... "according to an RDS report").

It's D- (or J-) Day!! Jagr to Answer Pittsburgh Today

Lots has occurred since my last post yesterday. My main source for #JagrWatch has been Twitter (mainly tweets from Rob Rossi and his "new sidekick" at the Trib, Josh Yohe).

According to Rossi and Yohe, Jagr's agent Petr Svoboda and Shero talked yesterday afternoon. Shero gave Jagr's agent the Pens final (perhaps only) offer last night and said they wanted an answer by today which is where we're at now (WAITING ...). Shero has said that with the Pens cap situation, the offer to Jagr is as good as it gets. It's officially a one-year deal, but details on how much has not been released (I've read that it's close, if not at, $2 million which is what Jagr reportedly was asking).

LATEST (AT THIS VERY MINUTE), Svoboda is saying Jagr is on a plane heading to the US (meaning Montreal is out of the picture, I'm assuming -- however, most sources have been told NOT to read into that) ... I would guess that we will definitely know his answer (Pittsburgh or Detroit) ~~once his plane lands and someone spots him and tweets about it~~. The latest #JagrWatch Trib article reports that Jagr's plane will land in JFK in New York.

"He is flying to New York (from the Czech Republic) right now," agent Petr Svoboda said. "He is coming this afternoon and will tell us his answer then."

Jagr is not expected to arrive in the U.S. until at least 3:30 p.m. Svoboda said he expects to know Jagr's decision within and hour of his arrival.

My gut is telling me he'll be playing with Pittsburgh next season but we'll know for sure closer to mid-day, so ...

Talbot Turns Down Leafs Deal

From "The Spin on Sports" in The Star, Talbot turned down a 4 year / $6.8 million ($1.7 per year) deal and still wants to test the market on Friday.

Various reports in the past few hours have linked the Leafs to Max Talbot of the Penguins, an eight-goal scorer who may command somewhere around $2 million a year in this inflationary market. The Penguins were willing to send his rights to the Leafs for a fifth round pick and let the Leafs talk to Talbot's agent first, but the two sides couldn't come up with a deal. It's suggested the Leafs were willing to do something in the neighborhood at four years, $1.7 million per, but there was no agreement and Talbot will see what kind of offers he can attract on Friday.

UPDATE:
The Penguins webpage has officially announced Dupuis' signing today.

The word is that the Penguins have re-signed winger Pascal Dupuis. No official announcement has been made (i.e., it's not yet on the Penguins webpage.

According to Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Rob Rossi (sources have confirmed), Dupuis signed a two-year deal worth $3 million.

The Latest on Penguins Free Agency Situation

The big news yesterday was that the Penguins did not extend a qualifying offer to restricted free agent Tyler Kennedy (they had until 5:00 PM yesterday to do so). This will make him an unrestricted free agent come Friday.

At first glance, it doesn't look likely that TK will be back in Pittsburgh next season; however, according to Pittsburgh Tribune Review's Rob Rossi, Penguins GM Ray Shero made this move to avoid arbitration (and alot of precious time being tied up).

"We want clarity in this situation. By doing this we get the most clarity," Shero said. "An arbitration hearing can go into early August. We want to know what's going on before then."

"(Kennedy) wants to come back," Shero said. "And we certainly want him back."

Shero's plan, again according to Rossi, is to re-sign Kennedy and sign Jaromir Jagr to a one-year deal BEFORE FRIDAY. He's also hoping to re-sign one or both free agents Mike Rupp and / or Pascal Dupuis before free agency comes into play on Friday at 12 noon.

Shero also confirmed to Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that a three-year deal was offered to unrestricted free agent Max Talbot who ultimately turned it down and will be testing free agency come Friday. This doesn't look good for Talbot returning in black and vegas gold next season although there could be a small glimmer of hope in the fact that Shero hasn't publicly announced that he wouldn't be signed as he did with Mike Comrie and Alexei Kovalev. A few weeks ago, it was reported by RDS.ca that Talbot would be interested in playing for Montreal if he doesn't sign with the Pens.

In other Penguins free agency news, two of Pittsburgh's AHL players will be playing for another country come next season.

According to Jonathan Bombulie (WBS Baby Pens beat writer for Citizens Voice), goaltender John Curry has signed with the Germany's Hamburg Freezers. Bombulie conducted a Q&A with Curry last week who was vacationing with his family. CLICK HERE TO READ IT.

WBS Baby Pens defenseman Steve Wagner was also signed by a German team - the Adler Mannheim Eagles signed him on June 9th.

Pittsburgh's 2011 Draft Picks (Rounds 2-7)

Because the Penguins had made a few previous trades (four since 2009), they only had five picks instead of seven in this year's entry draft.

They gave up their third- and fourth-round picks (and had given up their seventh after getting Alexei Kovalev from Ottawa the second half of this past season, but also acquired a seventh at the 2010 draft by giving their seventh round pick that year to San Jose).

The third-round draft pick was given up to Philadelphia at last year's draft (2010) in exchange for negotiating rights to Dan Hamhuis who ultimately signed with Vancouver instead of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh's fourth-round draft pick was given up back in January 2009 to Edmonton (along with goalie Dany Sabourin and forward Ryan Stone) in exchange for goalie Mathieu Garon. Pens 2011-12 Regular Season Schedule Released

Pittsburgh just released their schedule for the 2011-12 season along with the rest of the league. Here are some interesting items on this season's schedule:

Penguins season begins with a three-game road trip on Thursday, October 6th in Vancouver (10:00 PM); and ends in Edmonton on Sunday, October 9th (9:00 PM)
First home game is Tuesday, October 11th against the Florida Panthers (7:00 PM)
The Penguins will play the re-located [Atlanta Thrashers] franchise IN Winnipeg on Monday, October 17th (8:30 PM) then the team will travel to play at the CONSOL on Friday, February 10th (7:00 PM)

both games are listed as "NHL" (for "Visitor / Home") on the official schedule since the franchise has yet to choose a name for the team

The final home game (and for the season) is an afternoon game on Saturday, April 7th agains the Philadelphia Flyers (3:00 PM)

2011 NHL Awards Tonight (EA's NHL 12 Cover Athlete to be Unveiled!)

Tonight is the 2011 NHL Awards Show which will be broadcast on VERSUS at 7:00 PM (est). The ceremony is again being held at the Pearl Concert Theater in Las Vegas at the Palms Hotel.

Dan Bylsma is our only Penguins connection to the awards. Bylsma has been nominated for the Jack Adams Award which is given to the season's most outstanding coach.

The Jack Adams Award is an annual award presented by the National Hockey League Broadcasters' Association to the NHL coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team's success. The winner is selected in a poll among members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association at the end of the regular season.

Bylsma is among Barry Trotz (Nashville Predators), and Alain Vigneault (Vancouver Canucks) nominated for the prestigious coaches' award. I think he has a pretty good chance although Vigneault makes me nervous being that he led his team to the SC Final; however, I believe the awards are voted on prior to the playoffs so he may not have that advantage over Bylsma.

Another exciting part of tonight's awards ceremony is the unveiling of the latest cover athlete for EA's NHL 12.

Did you know that Sid has yet to grace the cover? It's pretty unbelievable, but very true (I'm not sure the reasoning behind it, but a guess would be that it's too obvious a choice ... IDK). Sid is, however, among the names being mentioned as possibilities for this year's cover. He would be the first Pittsburgh player on the cover since Mario Lemieux (NHL 2002).

My guess for this year's cover athlete is Tim Thomas. He's a pretty worthy candidate and according to The Examiner, the last time a goalie was featured was back on NHL 97 when John Vanbiesbrouck made the cover.

So be sure to tune in to the 2011 NHL Awards tonight at 7:00 PM (est) on VERSUS.

In yet ANOTHER category, Sidney Crosby beats out Alexander Ovechkin (and the amazing part is that he didn't even have to play an entire season to do so).

According to an article in SportsBusiness Daily yesterday, Crosby's jersey topped sales for the sixth NHL season in a row even though he missed half of it while recovering from a concussion he suffered back in January. He is joined by three other team mates - Evgeni Malkin (5th), Marc-Andre Fleury (10th), and Kris Letang (17th).

Interestingly enough, the Top 20 list is void any representation of Vancouver despite the fact that they made their way to the Stanley Cup Final.

Penguins Make Top Ten in ESPN's "Best Franchises in Sports"

ESPN The Magazine's ninth annual "Best in Sports" issue will hit stands tomorrow (Friday, June 17th) which includes the feature, "Best Franchises in Sports."

The “Best Franchises In Sports” feature is part of ESPN The Magazine’s Ultimate Standings methodology study, which determines an overall ranking for pro sports franchises according to how much they give back to fans for the time, money and emotion they invest in them.

In all, 122 teams from the NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball were ranked in order, based on a weighted average of scores in eight different categories ranging from the quantitative to the emotionally subjective: “bang for the buck” (24.3%), players (16.6%), fan relations (16.5%), affordability (14.1%), stadium experience (9.1%), ownership (9.0%), title track (6.7%), and coaching (3.9%).

The Penguins make the list at number 10 while the Pittsburgh Steelers were at number 7 and the rest of the rankings look like this:

Penguins Extend Craig Adams Contract

Guerin Pittsburgh's New Player Development Coach

The Penguins recently announced that they've named former player, Bill Guerin, as the new player development coach.

According to the official webpage, Guerin will work with Penguin prospects (helping with the development of players in the minor leagues as well as junior and college hockey).

“Billy has only been retired as a player for one year, so he brings a new and very contemporary perspective to the position,” Shero said. “He is going to be a big asset to our young prospects throughout the organization, and to our staff.”

It's nice to have him back with the Penguins organization even though we probably won't see much of him (he'll be working more "behind the scenes" now)!

Tony Granato, Todd Reirden, Gilles Meloche (goaltending coach), and Mike Kadar (strength and conditioning coach) as well as WB/S head coach John Hynes and assistant coach, Alain Nasreddine, all signed multi-year contracts with Pittsburgh.

“We’re excited to have this entire group together and under contract as we move forward and prepare for the 2011-12 season,” Shero said. “We think we have an outstanding coaching staff, both here in Pittsburgh and in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and this gives them and us a strong sense of stability.”

The Penguins already extended head coach Dan Bylsma's contract earlier this year.

New NHL Discipline Comes Through

Surprisingly, the new setup for league discipline seems to be working ... now the big test will come down to it's consistency league-wide (and if Brendan Shanahan continues with what the interim has set forth), so I don't think we'll immediately see the effects.

I'm sure most of you have at least heard about, if not seen, the nasty [LATE] hit Canucks Aaron Rome laid on Bruins Nathan Horton.

The hit left Horton dazed on the ice for a few seconds before he was wheeled off on a stretcher and transported to the Mass General Hospital where he was admitted for overnight observation. It was later reported that he suffered a severe concussion (and luckily it wasn't worse even though it was bad enough).

Prior to the NHL handing down Rome's punishment, the Bruins announced that Horton would be out for the rest of the Stanley Cup final.

The league announced they gave Rome a 4-game suspension which I believe is only fair (it's the same length of time for both players; the only difference being that the players are somewhat unmatched in terms of talent for their teams and, more devastating, Horton may suffer consequences far beyond the end of the playoffs). But here's the beauty of this decision (and where it appears the league is serious about turning this around): if it takes less than four games to win the Cup, the suspension will extend into the beginning of next season - message sent (and a step in the right direction for the league). Now let's hope the message is received.

"Two factors were considered in reaching this decision," said NHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy. "The hit by Rome was clearly beyond what is acceptable in terms of how late it was delivered after Horton had released the puck and it caused a significant injury."

The process for determining Rome's punishment seems simple enough (and full of common sense), but the impact of this decision on the future of hits like these in the NHL is only as strong as the league's consistency and it's commitment to back it up. For the sake of players safety (and Nathan Horton along with the rest of the players who have already suffered the consequences), let's hope this is a positive turning point.

Kansas City Still in Penguins Future

But this time it's about a less negative end result for Pittsburgh and Pens nation than the team moving there to make a new home.

After the NHL officially announced that the Atlanta Thrashers will relocate to Winnipeg, Manitoba, they informed Kansas City that they would host a pre-season game at the Sprint Center on September 27th between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Los Angeles King.

AEG, operator of the Sprint Center, owns the LA Kings and this will be the third exibition game the team will play in Kansas City in the past four years.

“I think this is a nice gesture from Pittsburgh, who benefited from what was rolled out to them here in Kansas City,” said Paul McGannon, president of NHL21, the grass-roots organization supporting AEG’s efforts to bring an NHL team to the Sprint Center.

“When they got their building, we asked them to consider playing a game in Kansas City in the near future. They’ve upheld our request, and we feel it’s a real positive.”

The Penguins Sign WBS Forward

Yesterday, the Penguins announced that they signed forward Zach Sill to a two-year contract.

Sill has been playing for the Penguins AHL affiliate in WBS since the 2009-10 season (prior to that he was playing for Moncton in the QJMHL). According to the official WBS webpage, he's a fan favorite.

Penguin Ties to Boogaard

The late Derek Boogaard had indirect ties to the Pittsburgh Penguins by way of his youngest brother, Aaron.

Back in 2007 the Penguins signed Aaron Boogaard to a three-year, entry-level contract. He spent the majority of his first season (2007-08) with the Penguins ECHL affiliate, the Wheeling Nailers, playing only two games with their AHL affiliate, WBS Baby Pens. The next season, Aaron played a total of 41 games with WBS.

Aaron followed in the footsteps of Derek playing the role of the enforcer on the ice for the Baby Pens.

Untimely Death of Ranger Enforcer Boogaard

UPDATE: In reading about Boogaard, I've learned more about the situation. The New York Post is reporting that Boogaard got permission from Rangers management a week prior to the end of the NHL season to exit early and "receive counseling to help him deal with unspecified issues." NYP learned that a few weeks prior to his death he began counseling with the NHL / NHLPA Substance Abuse & Behavioral Health Program.

The NYP further reports that Boogaard had an unremarkable season prior to sitting out after suffering from a concussion in a fight with Matt Carkner of the Ottawa Senators on December 9th. The Star (Toronto) spoke to Boogaard's close friend and fellow [former] NHL heavyweight Georges Laraque who told them Boogaard had been cleared from that injury and back training. There is no evidence that this could be a cause for his death. Larague planned to do some fight training with Boogaard this summer to help him get ready for the next season.

“He felt a lot of pressure and he was obviously really frustrated with his last fight that caused him a concussion, and that’s why he really wanted to come back stronger than ever,” said Laraque in a phone interview. “He’s the toughest guy in the league, right. There’s pressure that comes with that. But he was ready to take it.”

Today, Laraque dedicated a 42 km run to Derek then set out to "re-tweet" all the touching tributes posted on Twitter for him.

This has been news for a little bit today, but it's the first time I've been online and Twitter was just overwhelming with tweets about the death of NY Rangers enforcer, Derek Boogaard.

I was shocked as I'm sure everyone else is. Boogaard was found last night in his Minnesota apartment by his brothers, Ryan and Aaron. There has been no further information about his death and early reports say that an autopsy is being conducted but the results will not be released for at least two weeks.

He is survived by two brothers, his sister Krysten, and mother and father (Joanne and Len). He was only 28.

“Derek was an extremely kind and caring individual,” said New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather. “He was a very thoughtful person, who will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”

NY Rangers Article on Boogard

Michael Russo of The Star Tribune's "Russo's Rants" blog (Minnesota) spoke to Derek's brother, Ryan. He told Russo that his parents have donated Derek's brain to Boston Univeristy researchers who are studying CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) in athletes. CTE is a progressive brain disease believed to be caused by repetitive trauma to the brain, including concussions or subconcussive blows. Ryan went on to express the Boogaard family's appreciation of all the support:

"Our family appreciates everybody's calls and condolences," Ryan Boogaard said.

"Derek loved Minnesota. He loved it here. That's why he made it his place in the summertime. He loved the fans here. He loved playing in that building. He just loved everything about Minneapolis.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Boogaard family, the Rangers organization, and the entire NHL community.

Former Penguin Matthew Barnaby Arrested

Last night Matthew Barnaby was arrested at a home where his wife and two children live in Getzville. He was charged with and plead not guilty to criminal mischief, criminal trespass, harassment, criminal contempt and aggravated harassment.

Barnaby plead not guilty in an arraignment hearing at Amherst Town Court and was released on his own recognizance this morning .

He released the following statement:

"The past few months have been difficult on our entire family, as my wife and I decided to seperate and divorce, Barnaby said in a statement. "Last evening, there was an unfortunate disagreement between us regarding a family matter. There was never any physical violence or threat of physical violence involved. I would like to ask that everyone respect our privacy during this difficult time, and hope that this will be resolved quickly and amicably."

Michalek and Team Czech Republic to Play for Bronze While Neal and Team Canada Have Been Eliminated from 2011 IIHF World Championships

James Neal and Team Canada were eliminated from the 2011 IIHF World Championships in the quarterfinals yesterday losing to Team Russian 2-1. READ MORE HERE.

During the tournament, Neal tallied a total of five points (2G-3A) in the six games Team Canada played.

Zbynek Michalek and Team Czech Republic made it into the semifinals, but lost to Team Sweden today by a score of 5-2. The Czech Republic remains in the tournament (despite the report on the Penguins webpage that they've been eliminated) and will be playing for the bronze on Sunday against either Finland or Russia. If you've ever gone to a Pens game, you probably became pretty familiar with a particular vendor sprinting up and down the concrete steps of the Igloo pedalling cotton candy. He is known by many nicknames depending on which Pittsburgh sports event you attended (I've always known him as the "cotton candy man," Steelers fans know him as the "Coke-here guy," and Bucs fans called him "lemonade man"). His real name is Kenneth (Kenny) D. Geidel and, unfortunately because of his recent death, yesterday was the first time I actually learned his real name and the fact that he had a wife and four children. He was a husband, brother, and grandfather. He was just a regular guy.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Dejan Kovacevic wrote a really nice article / obituary that honors Mr. Geidel and is featured in today's paper. According to the PPG, Mr. Geidel fell ill on Sunday while working at the Bucs game and died the next day due to complications with an intestinal infection.

David Morehouse, Penguins CEO and president, had this to say (click HERE to read the brief article posted on the Pens webpage):

“Ken provided great service to our fans and was part of the fabric of a Penguins game at Mellon Arena or CONSOL Energy Center,” said David Morehouse, CEO and president of the Penguins. “The history of Pittsburgh sports is unique because it includes not just great players and coaches, but also memorable vendors and ushers. Ken was part of that history. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family.”

To say he was unique is a little bit of an understatement. His style of selling cotton candy (and other merchandise at the Bucs and Steelers games) was no doubt what made him stand out. "Cotton candy heeeeeeeere!"

He will truly be missed among Pittsburgh sports fans and there's no doubt that a void will be felt the next time any of us attend a Bucs, Pens, or Steelers game - he definitely added to the entire game atmosphere and your experience attending any sporting event in Pittsburgh. He will forever be a part of Pittsburgh sports history.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Geidel family. Rest in peace, Mr. Geidel (I will fondly remember you as the "cotton candy man," but I'm glad to know your name).

Canada Advances to Quarterfinals with Neal's GWG, Penguins Players Have Good Showing in IIHF World Championships

Both Michalek and Neal have been contributing to their teams' undefeated records at the IIHF World Championships and helped them advance to the Quarterfinals (they wrap up playing in the qualifying round today; Michalek's Czech Republic team finished in the top spot of Group E while Neal's Canada team is playing Sweden to determine the top spot in Group F as they are tied with 10 points each).

On Friday, Neal led all Canadian forwards with 17:26 minutes of ice time then scored the game-winning goal against Norway on Saturday.

Michalek had 22:09 minutes of ice time (a Czech Republic team high; second most minutes among all skaters) in their win over Slovakia.

I'd say that both Penguins players are representing their country and Pittsburgh pretty well ... GOOD LUCK, BOYS!!!

Two Penguins Participating in 2011 IIHF World Championships

James Neal (Canada) and Zbynek Michalek (Czech Republic) have been chosen to represent their respective countries in this year's IIHF World Championships. Zbynek's brother, Milan (who plays for the Ottawa Senators), will also be joining him on the Czech Republic's team.

The national tournament runs from April 29th through May 15th in Košice, Slovakia.

There are a total of 16 teams participating in the round-robin tournament which are placed in four groups to play in the preliminary round. The top three teams in each group will advance to the qualification round, while the last team in each group competes in the relegation round, where the top two teams will automatically qualify for the next year’s World Championships.

PRELIMINARY GROUPS:

Group A (Bratislava) - Russia, Slovakia, Germany, Slovenia
Group B (Košice) - Canada, Switzerland, Belarus, France
Group C (Košice) - Sweden, United States, Norway, Austria
Group D (Bratislava) - Finland, Czech Republic, Latvia, Denmark

VERSUS is broadcasting at least 11 games from the tournament which includes the four preliminary-round games (listed below), at least three qualification-round games, and at least one quarterfinal game.

From what I hear, Bylsma is staying with the same lines and won't make any changes which is typical since no one is out of the lineup (as was Kunitz in Game 4 when Tangradi made his NHL playoff debut); I honestly wish there was some way to get Tangradi in there or that Staal or Neal OR SOMEONE would create a presence in front of TB's net!!

MY PREDICTIONS:

I predicted that Neal and "Z" would both score goals in this round; Neal scored A BIGGIE during the second OT to win Game 4, so TONIGHT IS Z's NIGHT (and maybe a HT for Nealy - do it!)!!
the Pens are a better team than what they've been playing (especially in Game 5!), so they're due for a good game (tonight) and TB has yet to show any fatigue and I believe that's due as well --

the Pens are better than the Bolts, but the pressure lies with the Pens (it's anyone's game and whoever wants it more will win and WILL DESERVE IT)

Staal will step it up again and Fleury will have a brilliant game to make up for the last two
The Pens will have ONE powerplay goal at everyone's amazement (this will knock the Bolts off their game)
This game will have at least one overtime
There will be a hero (my guess is Talbot or TK)
Pittsburgh will need all it's players to have his best game and I BELIEVE they can do it ...

Roloson is 5-0 in elimination games (my questions: how long ago was that and who were the teams? I GUARANTEE Roloson is a different goalie and who the opposing team is makes a difference too)
the Penguins have gone 140 consecutive game, including post-season, since last losing three or more consecutive games (that was back in the 2009-10 season when they lost 5 in a row from December 27, 2009 - January 3, 2010)

WBS Baby Pens Sign Samuelsson to Amateur Contract

The Penguins just announced that their AHL affiliate, WBS Baby Pens, signed defenseman Philip Samuelsson to an amateur tryout contract. Earlier this month, Pittsburgh signed Sanuelsson to a entry-level contract.

I'm guessing this means the Baby Pens are short on defensemen and need to have him play for a short period of time ... a game or two - not exactly sure how those contracts work (and I believe this is what the Pens signed the Russian goalie, Alexander Pechurskiy, to when he played one game for them back in January 2010).

The Baby Pens advanced to the second round of the AHL Calder Cup playoffs and their first game of this round against Charlotte Checkers is tomorrow night.

MY THOUGHTS / PREDICTIONS:

TONIGHT, the Pens will have to maintain their physicality - even step it up some as Tampa Bay will be more prepared for them. But I still think they will be unable to match the Pens intensity (too many physical Pittsburgh players compared to what few the Bolts have)

Tampa Bay's fire power may not be able to prevail over all of Pittsburgh's toughness and playoff experience especially with all the role players who have a history of "stepping up" in post-season as was the case in Game 1 (Asham and Kovy; but also Adams, Rupper, Talbot)

STILL believe that there will be goals scored by both Neal (maybe even a hat trick?) and "Z" this round
Game 2 will be pivotal (if the Pens win, it will be full steam ahead which will create a sense of defeat for the Bolts and will take nothing less than perfect play to cause the Pens to waver ... but if Tampa Bay wins, it just means it will take more games to reach the inevitable - Pens win the series regardless)
we still won't see much from Stamkos (I think what was left of his confidence what knocked out of him with the hit from Orpik in the first few minutes of Game 1) and Lecavalier; however, St. Louis may just be "out for blood" (see "TAMPA BAY LINE / INJURY INFO below)

Martin St. Louis was accidentally struck with a stick in the mouth losing three teeth at the hands of Michalek last Wednesday; he had to undergo a DOUBLE root canal, but that won't stop him from being in tonight's lineup (this is the playoffs, man!)
